Historical Guide To Trevi Fountain

The Trevi fountain is the most famous of all the fountains in Rome attracting most first time visitors as a 'must see'.It is situated in the heart of the city centre, crammed in among a maze of narrow streets and alleys. All of a sudden you round a corner and it is there, right in front of you. There are a few rows of barriers/steps, stadium style around the trevi fountain for spectators. Most people don't stay too long, although it has many of the hallmarks of a tourist trap most people seem to enjoy their visit. Evening is a great time to visit prior to finding somewhere to eat in the maze of streets all around.

The ancient Romans relied on a network of aqueducts to bring water from outside the city. The Trevi Fountain sits at the terminal point of the 12 mile long Aqua Sunbulat aqueduct, commissioned by Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD and takes its name from the neighborhood it served, Trebium.

The design of the Trevi Fountain was an obsession shared by several great Roman attraction artists and popes. Bernini, artist, architect and a prolific builder of fountains in Rome, chose the Piazza Trevi as the stage for the Baroque masterpiece in 1640, but he never saw his plans executed. In the mid-18th century, Nicola Salvi won a papal competition to adapt Bernini's design and complete the project, but after 20 years work on the large Trevi fountain he died in 1751.

The narrow streets of Ancient Rome where you find the Trevi Fountain are far too narrow for buses to come up to the fountain itself. All the popular hop on, hop off sightseeing buses have a stop a few minutes walk, but stops do vary from line to line, some are much closer than others. The Via Del Tritone is less than a hundred yards from the Trevi Fountain and at last count 15 Rome city buses run along here to and from Barberini.

Legend An estimated average of 3,000 Euros a day are thrown into the Trevi Fountain by visitors who buy into the legend that a coin thrown into the fountain ensures a return trip to Rome the money funds a city food bank. The 1954 Hollywood movie,"Three Coins in a Fountain" popularized the legend just one of several movies that has featured the fountain as an iconic image of Rome.

The best time to visit Rome to enjoy its entire splendor to the fullest is either summer or spring, but the only drawback is being the most popular season for vacationers you should expect to feel the crowd all around or to put it more practically stand in cues in many tourist spots or popular dining areas. August is officially the time for summer vacation in Rome and also it is the busiest season in the year for travel guide.
